And the winner is . . .

Congratulations to the Pflughoeft family of Traverse City, winners of our latest Friday Night Live drawing!

The Pflughoefts were chosen at random from entries received on Friday, Aug. 18. They are the lucky winners of a $25 gift certificate to HandsOn Geography.

Like all the entrants, the Plughoefts filled out a form to name their favorite place in the Grand Traverse region, then marked the spot on our supersized map. Clinch Park was the Pflughoefts' favorite, and they weren't alone is choosing Traverse City locations. The marina, shopping district, and in-town beaches all garnered votes.

Most respondents, however, said their favorite places were in natural spaces, from South Manitou Island and Platte Lake to the Rapid River and Old Mission Peninsula. Family cottages "loaded with special memories" received several mentions, and one nine-year-old said her favorite spot was her house in Leelanau County because "I do and have everything there."

Thanks to all of your who stopped by our booth at Friday Night Live to tell us tales of your beloved places. Your enthusiastic responses confirmed what we have maintained from the start: People are passionate about this region and have much to say about how its cityscapes are growing and its landscapes changing. What they need is a place to voice their opinions and ideas.

That's why we created YourPlace, a forum dedicated exclusively to the discussion of our sense of this place. We hope you'll keep reading and writing, joining us in a civil and thoughtful discussion about growth, development, and change.
