The 2006 YourPlace Essay Contest

Are you one of our many readers who is also a writer? We’d love to publish your work – and we might even pay you!

YourPlace Magazine and Michigan Writers Inc. are teaming up to award $600 in cash prizes for the best “reflection” essays received in the coming months. Prizes will be awarded for the best essays in two categories:

  • Essay by a current Michigan Writers member -- $125
  • Essay by a non-member -- $75
Anne-Marie Oomen, a Michigan Writers board member and director of the Creative Writing Program at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, will judge the first round of submissions.

Essays will be judged in three rounds, with deadlines of Oct. 15, Nov. 15, and Dec. 15, 2006. To be eligible, essays should be original pieces of between 700 and 1,500 words and discuss places, people, or problems in the Grand Traverse region (Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Leelanau counties). Email submissions to yourplace@liaa.org with “essay contest” in the subject line.

Essays that aren’t chosen as winners but meet YourPlace standards will be published with no payment to the authors. We generally rely on volunteer contributors and do not pay for articles.

Michigan Writers, an open membership organization, is a partner in YourPlace, a new online magazine launched in June. For more information, visit their website at michwriters.org.

As you know, YourPlace is dedicated to furthering a civil discussion about our “sense of place” in the Grand Traverse Region. We hope you’ll consider adding your voice to this important discussion.
