Christmas Bird Counts

By: Kate Trainer

Each year around Christmas a handful of hardy nature-lovers leave the holiday rush behind to document Northern Michigan's true "snowbirds": the region's avian population. Patrolling back roads on a designated winter day is a tradition, a playful competition, and can produce important scientific information. Can owling at 4 am be a lonely endeavor?  Here is an illustrated audio adventure that takes us there and all over Leelanau County as Kate Trainer joins the fun (the audio starts about 9 seconds after you load this page).

Kate Trainer is a vidographer and a member of the Listening to the River project team.
